My husband went on a business trip to Spain about two years ago and on his return very boldly announced: "We are moving to Spain!" The children went: "Yeah!!!!!" and I went: "What?????".
After I have calmed down and got my breath back, I asked: " Why love, did the company transfer you?" "No!" he said, "but I left my briefcase and laptop on a bus stop and when I returned 1/2 hour later, it was still there!
I want to live in a country where you don't have to spend a big chunk of your salary each month on security!" I made us a strong cup of coffee and we had a long discussion about whether we should go or stay in South Africa, but I am happy to report that we are still here and happily so. We have a beautiful country and we are surrounded by friends and family whom we love dearly and that is not something to give up that easily.
While on his trip he was invited to many "tapas" style meals and he loved it. So when I heard this recipe on the radio yesterday morning, while I was driving, I decided to make it for supper last night. So, we had our own little tapas in our own little house , in our own little country!
Patatas Bravas
Ingredients
about 1 large potato per person - peeled and cut into big chunks
1 medium onion - peeled, but keep it whole
1 onion - sliced
5 whole cloves
1-2 tsp smoked paprika
3 cloves garlic
2 Tbsp tomato paste
fresh thyme
salt and pepper
1 chopped chili - optional.
Press the cloves into 1 onion and place the onion, potatoes and salt in a pot with some water. Cook the potatoes until soft, but not mushy. Heat some olive oil in a pan and add the onion, garlic and paprika.
Fry until onion is soft and add potatoes. Lower the heat and let the potatoes caramelize. Finally add the tomato paste and season well. Sprinkle with fresh herbs and enjoy as a light meal or add slices of pork smoked pork fillet.

this dish looks really good. I ve never heard of smoked paprika . hope i ll manage to find it. it s not easy to live in another country when you re already settled means you ll lose friends family and change culture. I agree with you
Count me in, Nina!
Yum, that is one of my favorite tapas, I especially like them serves with a garlic paprika mayo
I love potatoes and these look delicious!! What a great combination of flavors you are using.
I am so glad you are back on my site - thank you for letting me know about the problem. The widget that I removed was one that showed pictures of my previous posts. It's similar your Foodgawker widget.
Have a great weekend!
Well at least his reasoning is more sound than when Thatboy and I decided we should move to Austria "because it's so pretty"
WOW. That picture is just in your face FANTASTIC! Looks sooo delicious, yum.
I absolutel LOVE patatas bravas! I order them every time we go out for tapas. I will have to try making them at home with your recipe! They look so great.
Nina, You must have made your husband very happy! The people of Spain really know how to eat! This looks so good!
snooky doodle - South Africa is quite behind on the culinary trends and we have smoked paprika, so you should be able to find it easily!
maryann - sure thing!
kat - that sounds like a great plan.
pam - I am the happy one, now!
that girl - "pretty" is s good enough reason for me!

What a great way to make potatoes. I love all potatoes, so I'm sure I'd love this!
Yum! Being half Irish, I love all things potato!
Mmmmm, patatas bravas on their own are almost reason enough to move to Spain :) Amazing how something so simple can be sooooo good. The Spanish really know how to eat. Love the briefcase story - I had a moment like that the other day when I left the boiler repairman in my house alone for like 5 hours (my house where NOTHING except the toilet door locks...) and nothing happened! He took nothing! His friends didn't come over with a bakkie and take away my TV as soon as I was round the corner! It's a different world...
I definitely know how your husband feels, recently adding more security features to my home, especially outdoor lighting.
Potato Tapas sound excellent.
I had these in Tenerife and they are delicious. Yours look even better!
I still am having problems linking my site to yours, can you visit me and sign up for my blog, so I can see what you have made next???
bellini vali - I thought you might like this one!
gaga - I know you will, thx for visiting!
katie - Oh you lucky girl...if ever I move it will be to Ireland!
jeanne - You know all is not bad her either. My friend went to Bloemfontein last weekend and saty in a hotel. That night in bed she took off all her jewelry to apply some cream and the next day when she landed in CT she realized that she had left the jewelry on the bedside table. When she phoned, the cleaner(who works on contract) had already handed it in at reception. Needless to say, the cleaner was well awarded!
lori lynn - why in heavens do you need security in LA?
nicisme - thank you so much!
chef E - will try my best!
Great way to do potatoes. Have to try this sometime.
SI SI SI, let's do tapas! Smoked paprika are a wonderful pairing for spuds. This could dangerously become a main dish for me.
I have heard of this but nevertried it. Looks like I might be attempting this one for dinner later.
I admire you staying in SA.
Gosh this makes me so darn hungry!
Those potatoes sound tasty!
