Fruity Breakfast Buns and a give-away!

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day so I would think up any excuse to indulge in a proper English Breakfast or maybe a Continental Breakfast with loads of fresh breads and jams to choose from. When we have something to celebrate as a family like a birthday or a graduation, we also search for a restaurant with a beautiful view and book it for a lazy long breakfast.
Even when we all gather in Hermanus for our annual holiday, you would wake up every other morning by the lovely aromas of frying bacon and sausages coming from my mom's kitchen. During school time, there is hardly time to sit down to a lavish breakfast, but on weekends I like to spoil my family with something special for breakfast.
What makes these fruity breakfast buns special is that you can ring the changes by adding your own unique flavors. You can use different fruits, nut or jams and your end result will be totally different from mine, but equally delicious. If you read the steps of this recipe, please do not despair, it is not difficult at all, remember from my previous Masterclass post, just focus on each step and it will be a breeze!!! Three of the steps you can make in advance, which makes Step 4 just so much easier..... I will break down the 4 easy steps for you, OK?

Fruity Breakfast Buns
serves 6

Ingredients

1 kg bread dough - buy from your local supermarket
125ml golden sultanas
125ml dry cranberries
125ml port
125ml butter
125nml ground almonds
1 big tbsp Verlaque Burnt Orange Seville Preserve - any other jam or marmalade will work.
250ml cream
1 egg for egg wash

Step 1

Buy the bread dough and allow to rise in a warm spot(window sill)

Step 2

Place cranberries and sultanas in a glass bowl and pour port over it, allow to soak for a couple of hours. I keep a jar full of this stuff in the fridge.

Step 3

Place the butter, ground almonds and jam in a processor and blitz into a creamy spreadable almond butter. You can also make this in advance, it lasts for a very long time in the freezer and is delicious on scones, warm bread or you can even use it to pan fry some bananas or apples for a tart.

Step 4

Once the dough has risen, punch it back and form into a round ball. If you have a big enough workspace, you can dust it with flour and start rolling out the dough in an oblong shape. If not, divide the dough in two batches and start rolling it out. If the dough is rolled out( about 1cm thick), spread lavishly with the almond butter, drain the fruit from the port and sprinkle the cranberries and sultanas over the almond butter. Do not spread right to the ends of the dough. Dip your finger in the egg wash and wet all around the edges of the dough.  Start rolling up the dough from the long side. Keep rolling, rolling, until you have a roll, almost like a jam roll in front of you. Take a sharp knife and cut rings(discs), about 2cm thick from the roll. Place on an oven tray, a few centimetres apart.
Brush the rolls with egg wash. Drizzle a little cream onto each roll and allow to stand for about 10-15 minutes. Preheat the oven to 180 C. Bake for 25-30 minutes and enjoy piping hot with a cup of coffee for a delicious late lazy breakfast treat.

These buns look great! Reminds me of chelsea buns that we used to buy at the tuckshop back in my high school days. They were supersweet, but ohsogood.

Oh, and there's 77 posts (I counted them, didn't just steal Jessica's answer. Although I was tempted to...)

I made something similar recently - some with dried fruit and some with cinnamon. They were great for breakfast and didn't last much longer in our house. Lovely pictures.

I think I'm going to go with 77! Yes, definitely 77, lol!
I like the soaked fruit, think I'll give them a rooibos twist, it's my "new" favourite flavour. Yummy, Dad is going to love waking up to these on Christmas morning - perhaps I'll treat him and make them sooner too!
Thanks Nina, you blog is always an inspiration to me.

I love nachos and last weekend made breakfast nachos. Made scrambled creamy eggs, added some crispy chopped bacon and some musched avo. Added salt, peper, few drops of sweet chili sauce and few drops of tomato sauce, peri peri sauce and some Robertsons Garlic, Lemon & Parsley.
Packed some nachos chips, layered it with the egg mixture, dolloped spoonfuls of avo dip and sour cream and herb dip all over, packed some more nachos, sprinkled with crumbled feta and cheddar. Baked in oven till warmed thru and cheese melted.
