Rump steak to leave a partner breathless.

Rump Steak on its own has never got me all hot and sweaty but what I have just got up from is a meal that I would invade a country for.(G.W.B-leave Iraq-Come to Cape Town)
A taste bud fantasy with an onion puree and a cranberry reduction. Touched with roasted truss tomatoes and baby fennel- not to mention a hint of the vineyard has been the reason for me forcing Nina to type the recipe and I will document the experience.
Watching the famous folk getting orgasmic about food rather than organic has always left me wondering if it is all real. But baby has my wife blown my hair back tonight. A guy who spent the first 2 months of the year not eating any meat has just been reminded why we got excited as a species that fire had been found…

A touch of fat on the edge made my taste buds “curl “ and the bright red cheeks on my plate added by the tomatoes ensured an offset to the reduction and a calming effect on my senses.

Close your eyes…imagine calm thoughts of winter fires and autumn leaves…Jacaranda blossoms on the walk ways…and soldiers returning victorious from battle in a soft warm rain –and we didn’t even get desert! – Des(the husband)
Ps: Every Friday night we race home to watch Boyd Coddington(who passed away today at 63) and the American Hot Rod Team on Discovery Channel – this steak reminds me of him – not the softest, not the toughest, but leaving a wonderful memory.-RIP
For the rump steak

Buy a good mature rump and marinade it in the following for at least 1 hour

Chopped oregano
zest and juice of a lemon
a glug of balsamic vinegar
NO SALT


When ready to eat, heat up your barbecue or griddle pan and when it is very hot, grill steaks to perfection. Add salt during cooking.

For the onion puree
Take 3 onions(peeled and quartered), a sprig of thyme and salt and place in a foil parcel in oven for 1 hour at 180 C.

When done, puree and add a knob of butter. Keep warm

For the cranberry reduction
Take 125ml dried or fresh cranberries, 200ml red wine and 1 Tbs sugar and reduce to a thick consistency.

For the veggies

Place baby fennel bulbs and truss tomatoes in oven with a dash of balsamic vinegar, a pinch of sugar , salt and pepper and cook for about 20 minutes at 180 C.

    glamah – a hot griddle is essential and only turn if steak tell you: “I’m read!” (it won’t stick to the pan.)
