cocktailsCocktails without the sting, yes! Cocktails without alcohol may seem like a stupid idea to some of you, but for someone like me  who is a complete teetotaler, it became somewhat of an obsession.

Cocktails are the in thing at just about every launch or event I attend, but on arrival I am usually frowned upon when I ask for a virgin or alcohol-free cocktail. I have to settle for sparkling water or a soft drink if I’m lucky. That’s like offering a vegetarian a Greek Salad as the only meatless option on a menu! Really, how many Greek Salads can you handle and how many soft drinks can you enjoy while people around you are sipping on delicious cocktails such as  Mojitos, Margaritas and Cosmopolitans.

Is it really the taste you are after or the kick you get from the cocktails? I am sure both, but in my case it is a lifestyle decision, but I do not have to deprive myself from tasty alcohol-free cocktails, should I? cocktails

When Soda Stream send me one of their brand new machines, the Sodastream Source, I thought it will be the perfect time to experiment with a few concoctions of my own.  I have to say my cocktails were delicious and I had a whole panel of tasters, but what impressed me more about the Soda Stream was the whole concept of  literally saving our planet with every drink that you make. The Sodastream  not only turns ordinary tap or filtered water into carbonated water, but  the products are environmentally friendly, cost effective, promote health and wellness and are customizable and fun to use.

The Sodastream systems are convenient and eliminates the need to carry bottles or cans from supermarkets,  storing or disposing of bottles and cans.

A few statistics to consider:

340 billion beverage bottles and cans are not recycled every year worldwide. That’s a recycling rate of about 26 percent.1

141 billion beverage bottles and cans are not recycled every year in the United States. The recycling rate for all Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles is only 23.1 percent, so that 100 billion beverage bottles were not recycled in 2009.2

Carbonated beverage and sparkling water consumption is growing rapidly. The environmental cost to produce the plastic bottles and transport the goods to consumers is high.

With an average consumption of over 118 liters of carbonated drinks per capita annually, it’s time to consider an alternative to packaged carbonated drinks and sparkling water.

So get yourself one of these nifty machines and start creating your own cocktails whilst saving our beautiful planet.

Back to the my cocktails, I wanted to add a fun element to my cocktails and decided to make sorbet in stead of the ice, to give a cocktail an interesting and luscious feel.

For the sorbet

250 ml water

250 ml sugar

250 ml lemon, orange or pineapple juice.

Bring water and sugar to the boil in a pot and add the fruit juice. Mix and place in a plastic container in the freezer and scrape with a fork to break up the ice crystals. Add lemon, orange or lime zest, mint or even basil to your sorbet, depending on the drink that you will make.

Mojito without the sting

15 ml  Sodastream Summer Lemon

250 ml carbonated water

2 slices lime

1-2 sprigs of mint

1 scoop  lime sorbet

Pour the Sodastream Summer Lemon in a glass and top up with carbonated water. Add the lime and mint and just before serving add the scoop of sorbet. The sorbet melts into your drink and infuse it lime flavor while at the same time adding sweetness to your drink.

Pineapple Passion

15 ml Sodastream Ginger Ale

250 ml carbonated water

a few slices lemon

a sprig of basil

1 scoop pineapple and basil sorbet

Pour the Sodastream Ginger Ale in a glass and top with carbonated water. Add the lemon and basil leaf and just before serving, add a scoop of pineapple and basil sorbet.

To buy one of these wonderful machines, visit Yuppiechef and order one online, while at the same time have a look at the 3 recipes I cooked in the amazing Yuppiechef kitchen!

Tomorrow morning just after the 9 o’clock news, I will be  in the RSG studio, making delicious alcohol-free cocktails. I will also take you into the kitchens of other bloggers, chefs and interesting South Africans this year. So buckle up, it is going to be an awesome ride. Tune in 100-104FM or listen online here!
