Braai Day – My easy heritage recipes!

Braai Day in South Africa falls on 24 September every year and I think more people celebrate Braai Day than Heritage Day which is what it is really called on our calenders. I share with your my easy braai recipes that is as colorful and flavorful as our diverse nation!
Braai Day is sacred business in our beloved country and every respectable South African will offer something to the god of Braai on Tuesday! To me, it does not really matter what we grill, it can be something as simple as a burger or boerewors rolls, it is the togetherness and camaraderie that happens around a fire that I absolutely love! Before I got married, I sometimes went to our holiday home all on my own during the shorter holidays and was quite comfortable lighting a fire just for myself! Nowadays, I still make a fire every now and then when hubs is working late, but at least I get tp share my “burnt offerings” with loved ones!
For this year’s Braai Day, I want to incorporate the wonderful diverse flavors our of country. Think bobotie, chakalaka, tomato jam and all the old traditional flavors! I want all of those flavors in my recipes. Making bobotie on the open fire does not really fit in with the whole idea of Braai Day, so I am making another plan! I will use all the traditional bobotie spices and make a rub for my lamb chops! Delicious, even if I have to say so myself!
For the pure beef burgers, I can think of nothing else but a chunky chakalaka to bring those burgers to life! Simple flavors, yet the chakalaka will cause an absolute flavor explosion in your mouth! The pork belly kebabs will be served with a tangy, feisty tomato and chili chutney. The tomato chutney is inspired by the tomato jam my gran used to cook for us! I add fresh ginger and chili for that extra kick of heat!
Bobotie Chops
serves 4 ( 2 chops per person)
Ingredients
8 lamb loin chops
15 ml dry coriander – dry roasted in a pan
15 ml curry powder
5 ml fine dry ginger
5 ml fine cinnamon
5 ml turmeric
5 ml chili powder
30 ml vegetable oil
salt and pepper
Method
Grind the dry coriander in a pestle and mortar and then add all the other dry spices, except the salt and pepper. Add the oil and rub the wet rub into the lamb chops. Braai or grill over hot coals and season with salt and pepper once during the grilling time. Serve with “stywe pap” and come of the delicious chakalaka!
Belly pork Kebabs with Tomato Chili Chutney
serves 4
Ingrdients
4 belly pork kebabs ( Ask your butcher to do this for you)
salt and pepper
10 ml dry fennel or coriander
juice of 1 lime
15 ml olive oil
For the Tomato Chili Chutney
500 g baby tomatoes
200 ml sugar
125 ml white wine vinegar
10 ml finely grated fresh ginger
2 ml salt
Method
Rub the pork with the olive oil. Mix the salt, pepper and fennel and rub into the pork. Place on hot coals or a grill and cook until done. During the cooking time, drizzle some lime juice over the pork!
To make the Tomato Chili Chutney
Place all the ingredients for the chutney in a small pot and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer until the chutney has a thick syrupy consistency! Serve with the pork kebabs!
Chakalaka Burgers
serves 4
For the Chakalaka
15 ml olive oil
1 large onion – finely chopped
1 green pepper – finely chopped
2 carrots – coarsely grated
2 big tomatoes – chopped
10 ml red curry paste
salt and pepper
Method
Heat the oil in a pot and saute the onion and green pepper until the onion is soft, but not mushy. Add the carrots and tomato and also the curry paste. Cook for about 5 minutes, stirring every now and then to prevent the chakalaka from burning.Season with salt and pepper and serve with pap or on a burger like I will do!
For the burgers
Ingredients
4 beef patties of your choice
salt and pepper
10 ml Mrs Balls Chutney
4 hamburger rolls
fresh lettuce
2 thick slices of cheese
Method
Braai or grill the burgers to your liking and baste with the Mrs Balls’ Chutney. Season with salt and pepper Slice open the hamburger rolls and place the lettuce and cheese on the bottom half. Place the burger in the cheese and lastly top with the chakalaka and serve with some chunky fries!

Yay… That is my niche… They have a Chenin Blanc Grenache Blanc blend ( I m not a white wine drinker but have heard it has just the right dryness of a chenin), Pinot Noir Chardonnay blend (lovely colour not too red just “the right shade of red”, a Shiraz Grenache blend (known as a womens wine), Grand Vin Bordeaux-style blend (that is my best and very close to a French Bordeaux), Méthode Cap Classique champagne-style sparkling wine (very soft on the pallet with the bubbles on top).Muscat de Frontignan natural sweet wine(lovely desert wine… some like it as aperitif wine with snacks…)Tomorrow I braai 5cm (no not my famous pork chops…) T bones with sauce de Paris and a garlic butter.
