Magic Bars – Magic when you bite into them and magic how easy it is to put together!
Magic Bars – I must confess, I had no idea what they were until last week when I tasted one for the first time! Oprah calls it an Aha-moment and biting into those magic bars certainly caused an Aha-moment for me! Maybe because it was so totally unexpected……. my lunch I just had, was nothing special and I paid reluctantly, when my eye fell on these “energy-bar” type cookies. I am not a great fan of energy bars, maybe because I have been told so many times of all the sugar and “bad carbs” that are in them, but these ones were different! They had chocolate chips and they looked so moist and delicious! I bought 4 to serve as dessert at a friends house and that set me off a good couple of rand, but they were totally worth it! The cashier behind the counter tells me the magic bars are their best sellers as if that could justify the price I paid….
Well, at least he is making money out of his baking skills and that is something worth applauding! People who have gone through some hard times, but survived because of their tenacity and drive and stubbornness to give up! Just visit the markets near you and you will see the creativity of people! People are making an honest living out of their cooking and baking skills and that is exactly the idea behind Learn to Earn and more specifically the Bake-for-profit program. That is why this years CookieSwap2014 event will donate the moneys raised to this worthy charity. The details for our annual cookie swap are as follows:

Back to our magic bars – the recipes that do exceptionally well for me are usually the ones with very few ingredients and a method that has only one sentence : “Add everything together and bake”! These magic bars are that simple, it has 7 ingredients and that is it! How easy can that be….. let’s bake!
Magic Bars
makes
Ingredients
200 ml butter
1 pkt Moirs Tea Lovers biscuits or graham crackers crumbs
375 ml dark chocolate chips
375 ml white chocolate chips
250 ml flaked coconut
250 ml roughly chopped Safari pecan nuts
1 can condensed milk
Method
Heat the oven to 180 C, spray a rectangle deep pan ( 20 x 15 cm)with spray and cook or line with baking paper ( not wax paper). Melt the butter in a small bowl and then add to the biscuit crumbs. Mix and press down into the prepared pan. Now add all the other layers of the dark and whit chocolate chips, the coconut and nuts and lastly pour over the condensed milk!
Bake for 25 minutes or until the bars have browned slightly. Cut and keep in an airtight container.
Tomorrow morning just after the 9 o’clock news, I will be sharing about these magic bars and also how to bake for profit. I will also in weeks to come take you into the kitchens of other bloggers, chefs and interesting South Africans this year. So buckle up, it is going to be an awesome ride.
