Chai Spiced Cake

A Chai Spiced cake that says “Hello Autumn” in such a big way. The warm flavours are just insane.

The Chai Spiced Cake is like a carrot cake, just better. It is moist, has character and a nutty flavor, but the chai spices just ticked all the boxes for me. I don’t even like Chai tea all that much, but my children do, so I baked them a cake they would like. Did they like it? Oh, yes, absolutely.

A lot of spiced cake recipes I found online, looked quite dense and dry to me. I decided to combine my carrot cake recipe and the  Healthy Cake recipe and add the Chai Spices. My plan worked. The Chai spices I added was in the form of Chai Tea.

Chai Spiced Cake

makes one 25 cm round cake


500 ml cake flour

5 ml bicarb

10 ml baking powder

5 ml ground cinnamon

5 ml ground cloves

2 chai teabags – you can use 1 T loose chai tea leaves

2 ml salt

375 ml vegetable oil

3 eggs

3 coarsely grated carrots

125 ml chopped pecan nuts

1 banana– mashed

1 big green apple – grated ( I kept the peels on)

375ml sugar


Preheat oven to 180C. Prepare 25cm cake tin with oil and grease-proof paper.
Mix dry ingredients together, as well as the content of the teabag. Beat eggs and oil together. Mix with dry ingredients. Now, mix carrots, banana, apple, nuts and sugar together and then mix with flour and egg mixture. Pour mixture into prepared tin and bake for 1 hour or until skewer comes out clean. Cool and decorate with cream cheese frosting. Make a good cup of coffee and enjoy!

    Ek wil graag ook weet waar kom die Chai tee sakkie in.
    Moet dit met kook water gesoak word?
    Hier staan ek nou en wil koek bak maar weet nie wat om met die teesakkies te doen nie!

      Hi Charon, I am sorry to only answer now…… the content of the teabags is added to the dry ingredients, as written in the recipe. I hope the cake was delicious!
