Leftover Beef Roast Bao Buns

Making Leftover Beef  Bao Buns is just the most delicious way of dealing with leftover beef roast. Not that we have leftover beef often, but if there is a little to spare, I love making this recipe.

Making the Leftover Beef Bao Buns is easier than you think, especially if you use my shortcuts. First of all, make sure you roast a slightly bigger chunk of beef, so that you always have leftovers for sandwiches or tacos. Secondly, I use ready-made dough for the bao steamed buns. I buy for my local supermarket – just ask at the bakery section.

Speaking of ready-made dough, here are a few of my favorite recipes, using this shortcut.

The Cheese and Biltong Pull Apart Bread is a thing of dreams. Do make it for your kids.

If your family loves pizza, these Caprese Bombs are going to bowl them over.

For the choc-a-holic in your life, do try these Chocolate-centered Donuts, just be warned.

Ok, onto the recipe. This recipes also works well with pork.

makes 16

For the steamed buns

1 kg ready-made bread dough

15 ml vegetable oil

Cornflour for rolling out the dough

Making Bao

Flour a working surface with the cornflour. Divide the dough in two and roll out to about 3 mm thick. Use a cookie cutter and cut out circles. Dip your finger in the oil and rub on half of each circle. Fold circle and place in steamer, lined with baking paper. Place the steamer on pot of boiling water and steam the buns for 8 minutes. Remove the buns, cover with a dry cloth and repeat with the other half of the dough.

For the Shredded Beef

About 3 cups shredded leftover roast beef

1 large spring onion – finely chopped – use white parts and keep green parts for garnishing.

30 ml / 2 T vegetable oil

10 ml/ 2 t minced garlic

10 ml / 2 t minced of grated ginger

1 green chili finely chopped

5 ml / 1 t red curry paste – optional

10 ml / 2 t brown sugar

10 – 15 ml soy – might be to salty if beef was very salty

A little water if necessary

Juice of 1 or two limes
